Tuning in to Physical Activity

This Resource broadens students’ understanding of the relationship between physical activity, health and wellbeing. The content requires students to identify and reflect upon their lifestyle habits with particular reference to recommended Australian Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines for children and sun safety practices. It provides opportunities for students to suggest ways that they can increase their physical activity levels in their daily routines whilst reducing their sedentary behaviours.
Students will be encouraged to keep a journal, called their ‘Tune-Up Kids’TM Journal, about their physical activity habits. In addition, students will participate in a ‘Healthy Habits’ Passport activity over a two-week period. More Info
‘Healthy Habits’ Passport

The tune-up kidz Award is given in recognition of individual achievement in reaching and maintaining specific nutrition, physical activity and other health-enhancing goals. The success of the Award relies significantly on parental involvement and support at home.
The tune-up kidz ‘Healthy Habits’ Passport consists of three Levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Each Level lasts for 2 weeks and contains seven Healthy Habits:
• Healthy Breakfast • Fruit and Vegetables
• Physical Activity • Water and Other Healthy Fluids
• Healthy Teeth • Healthy Sleep • Me Time.

Health-Related Physical Activity

This Resource begins with students participating in a range of physical activities to understand the effects that exercise can have on heart rate. The content introduces the benefits of physical fitness to health and wellbeing. It allows students to participate in activities and develop skills that will enable them to develop cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and healthy body composition. Warming Up and Cooling Down

Warming up before exercise and cooling down afterwards are recommended physical activity practises. The first part of this Resource provides opportunities for students to explore the importance of warming up the body in order to prepare it safely and effectively for physical activity. Students will identify the parts of a warm up and participate in a variety of joint mobilising, pulse raising and stretching activities.
The second part of the Resource provides opportunities for students to engage in a variety of cooling down and stretching activities. Through active participation and teacher guidance, students will recognise the benefits of cooling down and stretching after exercise and how relaxation techniques can help the body return to a more restful state. Muscle Strengthening Activities

It aims to build up students’ repertoire of muscle strengthening activities that they enjoy and in which they can actively participate at school and at home.
