Circle Talk
This Strategy will help students to:
- share their thoughts and ideas about Nutrition and Physical Activity with their peers
- interact and communicate with a number of peers on a one-to-one basis
- develop respect for the thoughts and ideas of others.
Implement using the following steps:
- Introduce and explain the nature and purpose of the Circle Talk Strategy to the students.
- Organise the class into two concentric circles (one circle within the other). If needed, smaller groups of students could be organised into separate concentric circles.
- Have the students on the inside and outside circles face each other and then stand (or sit) facing their opposite partner.
- Present a topic, issue or statement relating to Nutrition or Physical Activity to the group.
- Provide the class 15-30 seconds ‘thinking’ time and then ask the students on the outside circle to share their thoughts and ideas with their partner. Once the outside circle partner has finished speaking they say ‘pass’ to indicate it is the inside circle partner’s turn to speak.
- When the inside partner has finished speaking, have the outside circle students rotate one or two positions to face a new partner where the discussion process is repeated.
- Repeat the change of partner and discussion process as many times as required.
- Complete the activity with a debrief in which thoughts and ideas raised during the circle discussion are considered and reviewed.
VARIATIONS
Circle Swap
If the class has been organised into more than one concentric circle arrangement, students can interact with students in the other circles by swapping the inside circles from each group.
Beanbag Pass
A beanbag or token of some kind could be used to identify which partner is speaking. Odd Numbers Circle In a situation where there is an uneven number of students, encourage two students in one of the circles to work together as one person.
Moving Circle
This variation is very similar to Circle Talk. Instead of students in the outside circle moving one or two places around the circle, both circles rotate simultaneously in opposite directions. On a signal from the teacher, students move around and on “stop”, face the person opposite and proceed as for Circle Talk. Instruct any student who does not have a partner to go into the centre (the ‘Lost and Found Place’) so that they can team up straight away with any other student who does not have a partner. For uneven numbers of students, use the Odd Numbers Circle Strategy described above.
Musical Circle
As for Moving Circle except the teacher can use music to stop and start the students.
Activity Circle
As for Moving Circle except the teacher can link with physical activity by getting students to walk, walk fast, jog, skip, gallop, as they move around their circle. This can also be combined with Musical Circle.
